Ingredient Spotlight | Magnesium

Magnesium (Magnesium Chloride) is a magical compound. Not only is it a building block for essential body functions but this compound is efficient and highly potent. This mineral is technically a salt and in its basic form, can be found in “hard” drinking water.

Magnesium plays an important role in many chemical reactions in your body and also helps regulate blood pressure and glucose levels. It is a vital part of the day-to-day functions of the heart, kidneys and muscles. As an essential electrolyte, magnesium plays a large role in the regulation of  the levels of other vitamins and nutrients in your system. The chloride stimulates enzymes that digest starches, and when used as a supplement, this compound supports a healthy immune system and lessens inflammation. Some have found it helpful in treating migraines, high blood pressure and even asthma.

Magnesium’s effect on inflammation is key. Inflammation happens constantly in our body as a reaction to infection. As your body fights infection, it creates inflammation. Both minor and chronic inflammation have an effect on how we feel. Chronic inflammation has been associated with serious health conditions like heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. It’s unlikely that you have a serious magnesium deficiency but with the advent of water purification systems, most Americans get less magnesium than they should.

Where can you find magnesium (other than in the Onus iV drips including the John Myers)?

Surprisingly, nuts, tofu, leafy greens, whole grains, legumes, blackstrap molasses, wheat bran, even dark chocolate are all great sources of magnesium. Or drink some ‘hard’ tap water! And whenever you feel like you need an extra boost, don’t hesitate to stop by one of Onus iV’s locations in LoHi or Greenwood Village.
